I’m conflicted over the concept — while I think it’s good that they intend to have the affluence necessary to be stay-at-home moms, I’m depressed by the idea that they won’t be out working and contributing to society in a meaningful way.

You don't think that raising the next generation is a meaningful contribution to society?

What could possible be more important to society than raising and caring for the next generation? What could possibly be more meaningful than creating another human life and dedicating your self to bring it up a happy, positive human being? We all know the devastating effects of a shaky childhood on one's life, do you think mere acadmia meaningful? Working for money in an office meaningful compared to all this?
Thank god some young women have the strength and grace to fulfill the ultimate task in today's warped world.

All of these extremely gifted academic women giving up their potential careers to stay at home with their children is a choice that they have every right to make. We need well-educated parents raising their children to be well-educated as well. Condemning these women for making the choice to stay at home is the same as not letting them decide to join the workforce. The current push for "women's equality" is somewhat doing what the previous standards did... true equality will be when women are allowed to make a choice either way, and not be judged as "missing out" or not paying their dues to society. We all have different missions in life, and I for one am glad that we have well-educated women and men raising the next generation... hopefully these lovely, enlightened people can pass on a message of true equality to their children.

I know how you feel. It would be a lot easier if one could more easily find a part-time job with benefits, allowing both parents to share the dual roles.
